Spaghetti Family (Italian: La famiglia Spaghetti) is an Italian animated family comedy television series created by Bruno Bozzetto, and produced by The Animation Band, Mondo TV (also distributed) and Rai Fiction, and animated by SEK Studio. Also, it consists only a season and 26 episodes and it debuted on Rai 3 on December 2003.
Background[]
This absurd animated family comedy series is a kind of a spin-off each of our daily lives, since this exactly how they are, or at least the daily lives of Italian families. However, we’ll also come to find out that it’s the same way for all countries, except, of course, for The Spaghetti Family. Created by the magical mind and hands of Italian animator and designer, Bruno Bozzetto, this program will keep your whole family “glued to the tube.”
Basically, this series aims to humorously depict the family’s life and relations among its members, each time developing upon typical situations and mundane problems most any family usually faces at one time or another. Such problems will often seem very ordinary, but every viewer can identify with them quite easily, because they’re things we have personally lived through as sons, parents or mere bystanders, along with all the sorrow, anger as well as fun that goes with them.
So, this series wouldn't be described as especially dramatic or spectacular, but rather one focusing on particular moments in our life where each character’s personality is highlighted, underlining the contradictions and absurd conflicts coming out in every family.
Plot[]
As in every part of the world, there are families with their own problems. In Italy there lives the well-to-do “Spaghetti family,” a "normal" family that is rather numerous, chaotic and loud. The mother is a typical “Italian mom”; the father is a bit of a loafer, and the children are terribly messy; they love music, dangerous sports and computers. These kids are always goofing around and quarrelling with their parents, and the only thing they all agree on is their "unconditional" love for spaghetti, which they eat everyday, either at lunch or at dinner, enjoying it along with various sauces (“carbonara”, “aglio e olio”, “puttanesca”, or “arrabbiata”).
Production[]
The show was conceived in 1996 by Bozzetto, who was inspired by his family, and a pilot was shown in the first Cartoons on the Bay festival that year. The show won the Pulcinella d’Oro award in the 2003 Cartoons on the Bay.
