Everard Maltravers (known as Maltravers or Baron Van der Tilt in the sequel) is a character and the main antagonist of the 1999 animated film, The Legend of the Titanic and its sequel, In Search of the Titanic. He is voiced by Gregory Snegoff, who also voiced Scott Bernard in Robotech.

Personality & Appearance

Maltravers is a slender, tall man, with grey hair (colored red in the sequel) and an eyepatch over his left eye like a pirate. He is an evil, greedy, selfish, and villainous whaler who is also the captain of a whaling fleet. He is assisted by his butler, Geoffreys, as well as Rachel, the Duchess of Camden. Despite his butler's loyalty, Maltravers is quite cruel to him.

Roles in both films

The Legend of the Titanic

Maltravers is boarding the RMS Titanic. He is in love with Elizabeth, the daughter of the Duke of Camden and the stepdaughter of Rachel. He has asked for her hand in marriage, which he needs to obtain whaling rights from her father. The much younger Elizabeth is repulsed at this idea, though Rachel pressures her into marrying Maltravers.

However she falls in love with a gypsy by the name of Don Juan. Upon discovering this, Maltravers orders his butler to keep an eye on both Elizabeth and Juan. It is also revealed that Maltravers is working with a gang of talking sharks including Mr. Ice (Icy Incisors) Teeth. With their help, Maltravers plans to sink the Titanic but escape alive.

When Elizabeth denies him her hand in marriage, Maltravers resorts to drastic measures. He holds the Duke of Camden at gunpoint, while he and Rachel force the Duke to sign a whaling concession. The Duke is nervous, but Maltravers threatens to kill Elizabeth and Don if the Duke doesn't sign it. The Duke is left there, but is later rescued by Elizabeth and Don. Maltravers also gets the sharks to sink the Titanic by tricking a giant octopus, Tentacles into throwing an iceberg, which lands in the Titanic's path.

Right before the ship hits the iceberg, Maltravers and his cohorts escape by stealing one of the Titanic's lifeboats. Nevertheless, Maltravers' plans are thwarted. He and his cohorts end up lost in the North Atlantic, defeated. Despite this, he appears as an antagonist (of more minor importance) from the sequel, In Search of the Titanic. It is never explained how he managed to survive.

In Search of the Titanic

In the sequel, he and Geoffreys wants the treasure hidden inside the wreck of the Titanic, so they sent their mini submarines down to the ocean floor, only to get zapped by the Atlanteans' ray that make them forget why they were in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in the first place, especially Atlantis.
