Something strange is happening in a village of Maratha, not far from Tremal-Naik and Ada’s house. Several men have been behaving strangely, ever since they returned from the Calcutta marketplace with a cobra tattooed on their backs. Ada is worried, so she establishes telepathic contact with Marianne on Mompracem. Marianne talks to Sandokan, and they decide to leave for India.
When they arrive at Tremal Naik’s house, they discover many disquieting signs which cause them to believe that the sect of fanatic worshippers of the goddess Kali may be resurrecting. This is perplexing because the sect’s leader, the high priest Suyodhana, is believed to be deceased. The only clue Sandokan and his companions have is the tattoo artist in the Calcutta marketplace.
They find him in the back of his store where they also discover a trapdoor that leading down into a vast secret world… Below lie the streets of Calcutta, where a fakir instructs a class of naive Marathas. The fakir runs away and our heroes set off in pursuit and are attacked by hundreds of rats. Yanez is so scared of the rats that he emits vibrations enabling Ada to rescue them in the nick of time.
